Nyerere National Park formally known as Selous Game Reserve is Africa’s largest and oldest game reserve. The beauty of the park is matched by the quality of a safari with a wide diversity of safari activities. Nyerere National Park covers 50,000 sq. km and is among the largest protected areas in Africa relatively undisturbed by humans. Selous is rich in elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many other species. This tour will start at 7:00 a.m. with a direct flight!

Itinerary idea in detail

You will be picked up from the hotel at 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. (based on your hotel location to Zanzibar Airport) then fly to Nyerere National Park at 6:00 a.m. After arriving, you will check in and go for a game drive for a most tremendous and memorable safari.

Nyerere National Park boasts a large population of elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and endangered wild dogs. Commonly seen are lions, bushbucks, impalas, warthogs, ostriches, giraffes, elands, baboons, zebras, hyenas, kudu, rare sable antelopes and leopards.

You'll stop at 12:30 p.m. for lunch. You'll then embark on a game drive up to 3:00 p.m. when you will have a little break to take a shower in the hotel and have a little rest up to 6:00 p.m. You will then have dinner at 7:00 p.m. After dinner, you will start a 3-hour night game drive from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. There is much to see at Nyerere National Park night game drives.

Early in the morning before breakfast at 6:30, you'll go for a walking safari with a bushman. At 8:30 a.m. you will have breakfast. From 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., you will go on a boat tour. You will advance to the Great Rufiji River for a wonderful boat tour for 2.5 hours. The Rufiji River in Nyerere National Park provides boat safaris, making it one of the few places in Africa where it's possible to view wildlife and birdlife from the water.

During the boat safari, there is a great chance of spotting hippos, crocodiles and plentiful different bird species such as the African fish eagle, Malachite kingfisher, Goliath heron, African skimmer and Boehm's bee-eater.

After the boat tour at 12:00 noon, you'll go for lunch and take a shower. At 3:00 p.m. you'll drive to Mtemere Airstrip to catch a flight back to Zanzibar at 4:00 p.m. End of our tour.
